Dr Maria Panagopoulou

Dr Maria Panagopoulou is a Consultant Psychiatrist with over 20 years of clinical experience. She graduated from the Medical School of the University of Crete in 1998 and completed her psychiatric training in Athens and in the UK through the Charing Cross Psychiatric Scheme in London. She also holds an MSc in Drugs and Alcohol Policy from Imperial College London, completed in 2006.

Dr Panagopoulou has extensive experience in psychological therapies. She completed formal training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at the University Institute of Psychiatry in Athens and went on to work as a tutor on the same CBT training programme for four years. She has also undertaken further training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, systemic therapy, schema therapy and compassion focused therapy, allowing her to integrate psychological and pharmacological approaches to care.

She previously worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Lead for the Addictions Service at the Red Cross Hospital in Athens, where she gained significant experience in treating individuals with dual diagnoses. In the UK, she held the role of Clinical Lead for CGL in Coventry and Warwickshire from 2018 to 2021, and later in Cambridgeshire in 2021.

In November 2021, Dr Panagopoulou joined the NHS as a Consultant Psychiatrist within a Staff Mental Health Service, a specialist service providing bespoke psychological treatment to NHS staff. This service was shortlisted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists as one of the best psychiatric teams in the country.

Her clinical expertise includes the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, complex trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar affective disorder and psychosis. In recent years, she has developed a particular interest in neurodiversity and has undertaken extensive training in this area. She is highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults.

Dr Panagopoulou is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register as a General Adult Psychiatrist. She is Section 12 approved and holds Approved Clinician status. She is known for her compassionate, holistic and evidence-based approach, tailoring treatment carefully to each individual’s needs.

Outside of clinical practice, she enjoys reading, travelling, visiting art galleries and playing the piano.
