Dr Asha Mashru is an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a particular interest in neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, tic / Tourette’s syndrome and behaviours that challenge. She also works with a wide range of mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Her perspective is shaped not only by her clinical career but also by her personal experiences. She has supported relatives with neurodevelopmental and mental health needs and has navigated the NHS and other services alongside them. Asha also has her own neurodevelopmental diagnosis, which helps her connect with patients and families in a genuine, compassionate, and understanding way. Her appointments focus on diagnosing her patients and then getting to know people as individuals—their goals, strengths, and life circumstances. She works collaboratively, offering tailored treatment plans designed to support wellbeing and meaningful progress. Asha is particularly experienced in working with schools, multidisciplinary teams and within consultancy roles, providing guidance on neurodiversity and mental health to businesses, educational organisations, and media outlets.
She began practising as a Consultant Psychiatrist in 2017 and has worked across both the NHS and private sector in child and adult psychiatry, learning disabilities, and forensic psychiatry. Asha has recently worked in the Adult ADHD Team at Mersey Care NHS Trust and will be working with children with ADHD in Lancashire. She has previously held posts in London, Yorkshire, and Greater Manchester. She is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is Section 12(2) approved under the Mental Health Act.
Asha graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2006, where she was awarded a scholarship for an intercalated degree which 10% of students were given. Her subsequent training included an Academic Clinical Fellowship where she gained research experience. She also had a broad foundation in medical specialties before qualifying as a Consultant in Learning Disabilities. Asha also holds a Master’s in Mental Health Studies, has won a Royal College of Psychiatrists division prize, published research, and presented at national and international conferences. She has a passion for teaching and contributes to medical education at the University of Lancashire. Asha is also an examiner for the OxfordPsych course, supporting the development of other psychiatrists.
Before training in psychiatry, she worked in recruitment and trained in classical dance. Outside of work, she is a Mummy to her son in year 1 who wants to be a swimming teacher. She enjoys eating out, seeing friends, and is developing as a kickboxer — mostly by surviving classes and getting punched or kicked by her friends and coaches.
