Dr Arif Alam

Dr Alam is an accomplished psychiatrist with over 30 years of extensive clinical experience in adult mental health. He is renowned for his strategic leadership and unwavering commitment to clinical excellence. He specialises in the expert diagnosis, management, and oversight of complex psychiatric disorders, and is dedicated to delivering evidence-based, patient-centred care within robust clinical governance frameworks.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director for the acute general adult unit within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Dr Alam led a multidisciplinary team responsible for critical care delivery and the acute stabilisation of patients with severe mental health needs. His clinical approach is rooted in comprehensive and holistic treatment planning, with particular expertise in:

Affective disorders – including the management of treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder.

Complex PTSD – providing specialised, trauma-focused care and recovery pathways for individuals experiencing long-term effects of trauma.

Adult ADHD – offering thorough assessment and tailored pharmacological management for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Dr Alam’s career is distinguished by sustained clinical excellence and influential leadership. From 2022 until October 2025, he served as Clinical Director within the Adult Mental Health Directorate at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. In this strategic role, he was responsible for clinical governance, service development, and maintaining high standards of care across the directorate.
