Dr Stroma Macfarlane is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience in adult mental health care. She completed her medical degree at the University of Glasgow and specialist psychiatry training in the Wessex region. She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Education from the University of Winchester and is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych).
Dr Macfarlane brings substantial clinical experience across both NHS and private practice settings. She trained and worked as a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS for seven years at Solent NHS Trust in Portsmouth, where she worked across community and acute mental health services, managing patients in varying clinical configurations. From 2010 to 2016, she held the position of Consultant Community Adult Psychiatrist and latterly Clinical Director for Adult Mental Health and Substance Misuse Services, where she provided clinical and operational oversight.
Since 2016, Dr Macfarlane has maintained a thriving private practice and currently holds the position of Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist and Addictions Lead at Priory Hospital Woking where she manages an inpatient caseload across general adult psychiatry and addictions treatment programmes.
Her clinical expertise encompasses a wide range of general adult psychiatric presentations with special areas of interest that includes substance use disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, women’s mental health and their experiences of healthcare and the intersection of those. She is UKAAN certified in ADHD diagnosis, assessment, and pharmacological management and has extensive experience assessing, diagnosing and treating ADHD and its comorbidities. Her practice emphasizes collaborative, evidence-based care grounded in a biopsychosocial approach, with strong liaison with multidisciplinary teams, general practitioners, and external providers to ensure coordinated, comprehensive patient care.
Dr Macfarlane was born and grew up in Scotland where she completed her undergraduate training but has lived on the south coast of England for over 20 years and despite what her husband might say has a good grasp of the English language. She is passionate about spending time outdoors and maintaining an active lifestyle with her (mostly neurodivergent) family. She regularly enjoys walking her 2 dogs and sea swimming several times a week throughout the year, finding these activities essential for her own wellbeing and resilience.
