The Academic Impact: Navigating the Silent Struggle

For many students, ADHD is not a "learning difficulty" but rather a difficulty with learning, rooted in the brain's executive functions. These processes are vital for organising thoughts, managing time, and regulating focus—the very skills required for GCSEs, A-Levels, and university life.
Often, high-achieving students mask these symptoms for years, only to experience an unexpected "post-mock exam slump" or academic decline as the workload increases.
Recognizing that these challenges are neurobiological, and not a lack of effort, is the first step toward reclaiming your academic potential through a formal medical assessment.

The Assessment Journey: What to Expect

At Berkeley Psychiatrists, our assessment process is designed to be thorough, person-centred, and clinically robust, ensuring you receive a "gold standard" diagnosis.

Preparation and Pre-Assessment

Once you book your appointment, the process begins with a series of symptom checklists and registration forms. A critical part of this stage is gathering a collateral history. We ask for input from someone who knows you well—such as a parent, partner, or sibling—to gain a complete understanding of how your symptoms affect your daily functioning and developmental history.

The Clinical Consultation

You will meet with an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist either at our London Harley Street clinic or via a secure online video call. For students aged 18 and over, the consultation typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes, while assessments for those under 18 generally take between 90 and 120 minutes.

Evidence-Based Criteria

Our specialists use the DSM-V criteria, the international gold standard for diagnosing ADHD. The psychiatrist will explore your presenting symptoms, medical background, and family history (as ADHD has a strong genetic component) to determine the specific subtype of ADHD you may have.

The Private Advantage: Speed and Specialist Expertise

The most significant benefit of choosing a private assessment is the speed of intervention. Currently, NHS wait times for an ADHD assessment can reach up to 38 months, which is often too long for a student facing critical exam periods or university transitions.By choosing Berkeley Psychiatrists, you bypass these delays and gain direct access to Consultant Psychiatrists, many of whom hold senior leadership positions within the NHS. Unlike a purely "educational assessment," which can only offer study support, our medical diagnosis allows for the full range of treatments, including the prescription of medication.

Your Assessment Outcome and Personalised Support

Following your consultation, you will receive a comprehensive diagnostic report. This document is a vital tool for your education and future care:

Academic Accommodations

You can share your report with your school or university to secure Exam Access Arrangements (EAAs), such as 25% extra time, rest breaks, or the use of a word processor.

Bespoke Treatment Plans

Your psychiatrist will outline a tailored plan which may include medication, specialist coaching, or cognitive behavioural strategies to help manage symptoms like procrastination and disorganisation.

Long-Term Funding and Care

Our reports are recognised for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) applications and may qualify you for means-tested university support funds. Furthermore, we focus on establishing Shared Care Agreements with your GP. We currently work with over 1,500 GP practices, allowing many of our patients to eventually receive their ADHD medication as an affordable NHS prescription.
