Dr Witharana is a senior Consultant Psychiatrist who has been practising as such since 2012.
He has built up an extensive portfolio of responsibilities, including as an Associate Medical Director for Cygnet Healthcare UK.
He has been a clinical advisor to the General Pharmaceutical Council since 2019 and a Specialist Advisor to the Care Quality Commission (the main regulator for health and social care in the UK) since 2016. He also contributes to ‘First Tier Tribunals’, which deal with Social Security and Child Support, as well as contributing to the work of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
He has extensive clinical experience and has expertise in assessing and treating a wide range of mental health disorders, including Adult ADHD, mood disorders, personality disorders and he has special expertise in assessing the effects on mental health of trauma and injuries.
Over the past few years Dr Witharana has been a member of the Board of Examiners of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, specifically for the main clinical exam (the ‘CASC’ exam). He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s University, London and was a tutor at various levels from 2008 till 2012.
Dr Witharana serves on the Equivalence Committee (CESR) and the Patient Safety Expert Working Group, both of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is an Associate Editor of the Psychology and Behavioural Science International Journal.
From 2017-2019 he was the President of the Sri Lankan Psychiatrists’ Association (UK).
